A young woman talking on the radio

Volunteer with TIC

Our more than 200 volunteers help us ensure that we can continue delivering access to the printed word, including newspapers, magazines and books, to our listeners.

Interested in getting involved? Review some important notes to volunteering below and then complete the form to share your information and preferences and someone from the team will be in touch.

Important Notes

Please read and accept the following important notes about participating as a volunteer with Talking Information Center. Upon review and acceptance, you will be taken to a second form where you can share your contact information, involvement and communication preferences.

As a volunteer reader for The Talking Information Center, you will be taking on an invaluable role, that of connecting our listeners to the wider world through various forms of print media. The commitment of our volunteers, along with their flexibility and tolerance for these various

forms, is our tried-and-true formula for success. We appreciate your interest in becoming a part of our service. Please look through the following notes to determine if volunteering as a TIC reader will be an enjoyable investment of your time:

  • Some computer skills are necessary. Many of TIC’s reading assignments are recorded using a dual computer set-up, where you read from one computer while simultaneously recording into another. The process of recording is not a difficult one, but you will find that prior experience using computers will make the process simpler for you.

  • All new volunteers will record an audition demo for review. This is to make sure certain standards are met. These standards would include proper pacing, clarity, confidence, fluidity, and neutrality of tone.

  • All volunteer scheduling, including the initial audition demo, is coordinated through our Office Manager, who can be reached by calling 781-834-4400, extension 204; or you may email general@ticnetwork.org.

  • Most reading assignments will require a minimum of one hour per scheduled session, to match the broadcast duration of the bulk of our programs.

  • Please be aware that TIC is a radio station that must adhere to a firm timetable. If you are unable to keep your scheduled session, please contact the Office Manager via phone (781-834-4400, extension 204) or email (general@ticnetwork.org) with as much advanced notice as possible.

  • Please pay particular attention to our request for flexibility and tolerance when approaching TIC’s reading content. We cover national and local newspapers, current events publications, consumer information, medical and technology updates, community-based announcements, a selection of journals and magazines, and books.

Please be aware that political or philosophical bias is commonplace and that you may be asked to read news and views from across the spectrum. Also, please refrain from commenting on anything you read at any time and be mindful that your tone in reading the material does not reveal any personal feeling toward it. Always bear in mind the reader is the channel through which the listener accesses the information; the listener knows the reader is not the source of the information.

  • Individual reading sessions may be relatively consistent in terms of the publication assigned to you, or it may change frequently. Assignments are allocated based on what TIC needs for its broadcast schedule at the time of your session.
