TIC’s Starry Night Gala Celebrates 47 Years of Voice, Vision, and Community
KINGSTON - Community, connection, and the power of accessible information took center stage on June 12 as the Talking Information Center (TIC) celebrated its 47th anniversary with its Starry Night Gala - a fundraising evening filled with heartfelt stories, powerful reflections, and genuine generosity.
Held at the Indian Pond Country Club and emceed by Rob Hakala and Dave Boyle, the event brought together donors, legislators, listeners, volunteers, and community friends- all united by TIC’s commitment to promoting independence and building belonging for people with vision loss.
TIC Board Chair Christine James welcomed attendees by highlighting the people who keep the mission alive.
“This room is filled with people who show up - and that’s what matters,” James said. “You show up to volunteer, to donate your time, your money, and your effort. And we salute you.”
The evening’s keynote, Eavan O’Neill, shared her journey with Stargardt disease, a rare genetic eye disease that causes progressive central vision loss. Diagnosed at age 21, O’Neill spoke candidly about the fear and grief that gave way to empowerment through
community.
“Your eyesight might fade, but your story doesn’t end there,” she said. “In fact, it might just be beginning.”
In 2024, O’Neill founded Brightside, a support group for people experiencing vision loss, which has grown from ten members to more than 100 nationwide.
“Community is not just important - it’s vital to truly living,” she told the audience. “And accessibility isn’t just ramps and screen readers. It’s a world designed to include everyone - exactly what TIC helps make possible.”
TIC Executive Director Jacqueline Porro echoed that vision, describing TIC’s programming as more than just reading printed news and information, but as a way to build connection, foster independence, and affirm dignity for thousands of people across Massachusetts.
Porro thanked TIC’s staff and more than 200 dedicated volunteers, as well as longtime legislative supporters Senator Patrick O’Connor and Representative Kathy LaNatra, who recently joined the TIC Board of Directors.
A moment of silence honored the late Phil Johnston, a steadfast TIC advocate and public servant. His wife, Beverly Johnston, joined the gathering in his memory.
This year’s “Stars” recognized for their outstanding contributions included:
-
Christine James, esteemed Board Chair
-
Julie Cockerham, outstanding Director of Programming
-
Helen Muzyka, honored volunteer
-
Debbie Macauley, valued listener and advocate
Generous sponsors were also celebrated for sustaining TIC’s mission:
-
Guiding Star Sponsors: Tiny & Sons Auto Glass; Plymouth County Sheriff Joseph McDonald; Christine James & Jim Trenz; George Krein (in memory of his wife, Kathy); Tri-Town Rotary Club
-
Community Star Sponsors: Brabo; Plymouth Lions Club; Sullivan Tire and Auto Service
-
Supporting Star Sponsors: Cape Cod Five Bank; Coastal Heritage Bank; Citizens Bank; 1000 Southern Artery Senior Center
Porro encouraged everyone in the room to carry the mission forward beyond the gala. “Let’s build a world where information is not just a privilege - it’s a right,” she said. “Together, we shine brighter.”
